How names are used on Cash App:

When you sign up for Cash App, we'll ask you to provide your legal name and will use it on your profile by default. We'll also ask you to provide your legal name when you verify your identity. 

Other people on Cash App can use the name on your profile  to search for you and to make sure they're paying the right person or account. 

Using profile names on Cash App:

To ensure your account follows our Terms of Service, your profile name should be the name you go by. This will help your friends and others know who they're paying.

Cash App profile name criteria

• You may edit your profile name up to 3 times

• The character limit is 40

• No numbers, symbols, or extra spaces

• No more than 2 apostrophes, 2 hyphens, or 2 periods

• If you have a Cash App for Business account, you may use numbers

• If you have a personal account, you may not use business entity acronyms/names

• No profanity, impersonation, or fraudulent names

How to change your profile name

• Select the profile icon on your Cash App home screen

• Select Edit Profile

• Enter your profile name under Full Name

If your profile name follows our criteria and you’re still having trouble changing it, please contact Support for help.

Using a preferred first name on Cash App: 

If you go by something other than your legal first name, you can set a preferred first name that will show up on your profile instead. 

You can update your preferred name up to three times. Make sure you consider the following whenever you make changes to your preferred first name: 

• Must be at least 2 characters  

• Cannot include any numbers or symbols or more than 2 apostrophes, 2 hyphens, or 2 periods

• Names that include profanities, impersonate someone, or are fraudulent are not allowed

• Business names or acronyms are not allowed
