Flexibility & Innovation: Alec Strong

Introduce yourself. How long have you been working at Cash App? What team are you currently part of?

My name is Alec, I’ve been working at Cash App for 5 years, and I was an intern at Square for a year before that.

I do a lot of mobile development, and for the last year and a half I’ve been the mobile lead for the investing team, which is a lot more focused. I spend my time 50-50 on management and coding.

The Engineering team is highly distributed at Cash App. Tell us about being a Cash App engineer in Canada. How is that different from being located anywhere else?

One of the things that I like about this is it's much more flexible. If I want to work from my parents’ home, or if I want to be able to travel, like visiting friends in Ottawa, but I don’t want to take a vacation, you just work wherever you want, and it doesn’t really matter.

Tell us one thing that makes Cash App such a unique place to work.

There’s a lot of people on the team who have a big reputation within the community for doing consistently impressive work or inventing new things.

Innovating and inventing is very attractive to some people, and we had really good luck hiring those people.

We have this philosophy here that one of our main goals is to make Cash App a place where you can - and want to! - spend your entire career. How do you see this happening?

The bigger mission speaks to a lot of people: this idea that there’s people who are in need and being completely left behind by the bank industry right now, and we have an opportunity to help them. There’s gonna be people who want to help people who are being under banked.

Most of the people that I see interested in Cash App are attracted to the growth mindset we have. We’re looking for people who are willing to make mistakes, learn, and teach other people.

These are the most important things in our culture: very collaborative, big growth mindset, lots of learnings, and working in a company that helps people who need it.
