Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a Small Estate Affidavit?
In some states, a Small Estate Affidavit is a document that can be used to claim or disburse money from estates of limited size. Where Small Estate Affidavits are available, formal probate is not required under state law. The state law will specify the asset value that qualifies as a “small estate” and the requirements for the affidavit.

Why do I need to provide Cash App with a Small Estate Affidavit or an equivalent document?
Small Estate Affidavits are used to obtain a decedent’s assets, such as their Cash App account, without formal probate or administration. Not all states offer Small Estate Affidavits and filing requirements may be different.

You may also consider obtaining an official letter appointing you as the Executor or Administrator of the Estate from a probate court. For assistance with specific filing requirements, contact your personal legal counsel or a legal services clinic within your community.

Where do I get a Small Estate Affidavit or equivalent legal document?
Reach out to your local municipality or county court and check with the probate office to determine how to obtain these documents. If you need more help obtaining the required documentation, reach out to your personal legal counsel or a legal services clinic within your community.

Why do I need to provide Cash App with a copy of the death certificate?
We use the death certificate to verify the identity, date of death, and legal residence of our customer. Keep in mind that additional documentation may be needed to show who has authority to receive account information and/or assets on the decedent’s estate.
