Common questions

What age does my child need to be to use Cash App?

Kids ages 6–12 can get a managed account, where a parent or legal guardian manages everything through their own Cash App. Kids don’t get access to the app. Teens ages 13–17 can use a sponsored account with their own app access, under a parent or guardian's oversight. When a teen turns 18, they can verify their identity in the app and move to their own individual Cash App account.

How do I add my kid or teen to Cash App?

If you’re a parent or guardian of a kid 6-12, you can get them started with a managed account.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Open Cash App and go to the Money tab.

  • Scroll down to Family and tap Start.

  • Tap Get Started or just tap Add if this it’s an additional family member you’re adding.

If you’re an eligible parent or guardian of a teen between the ages of 13 and 17, you can invite them to Cash App.

To get started, here’s how to invite your teen to Cash App:

  • Open Cash App and go to the Money tab.

  • Scroll down to Family and tap Start.

  • Tap Get Started or just tap Add if this it’s an additional family member you’re adding.

  • Invite a family member.

After they accept the invitation, the teen can create a sponsored account and order a Cash App Card with the app. You'll have visibility into their account and can manage their settings from your own app.

Is there a fee for families to use Cash App?

No. There are no hidden monthly fees, no subscription costs, and no minimum balance requirements for either the parent or child. That applies to both managed accounts for kids ages 6–12 and sponsored accounts for teens ages 13–17.

How do I add money to my kid's account?

The simplest way is to set up an automatic allowance directly from your Cash App. You choose the amount and how often it transfers, weekly or monthly, and it runs on its own from there.

Can I order a debit card for my child?

Once you create a managed account for your kid ages 6-12, you can order them a debit card. They can choose their style and customize their Cash App Card with the assistance of their parents/legal guardians, and then they’ll receive it in the mail. You can lock their card anytime in your app.

If you have a teen on Cash App, they can also order a debit card. Parents can set spending limits and get transaction alerts when their kid or teen uses their card.

What is a Cash App sponsor?

A sponsor is a parent or guardian who creates and oversees managed accounts for kids or sponsored accounts teens on Cash App. To qualify, a sponsor must be at least 15 years older than the child or teen they're sponsoring. Sponsors are the legal account owners. They can monitor balances, real-time transactions, and spending history, and they control which features the minor can access.

How is a managed account different from a sponsored account?

The two account types serve different age groups and work differently. A managed account is for kids ages 6–12. The parent controls everything through their own Cash App account. Managed accounts have lower limits, and kids do not have access to the app. Kids have limited features compared to a teen account. A sponsored account is for teens ages 13–17. Teens have their own Cash App account and app access, but the sponsor maintains visibility and control, including key features like spending limits, approved contacts, and investing permissions.

Is my kid’s Cash balance eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance?

If you have a Sponsored or Managed Account, or if you sponsor or manage one or more Sponsored or Managed Accounts, your Cash App Balance and your Savings Balance are eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance through Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Sutton Bank, and/or The Bancorp Bank, Members FDIC, for up to $250,000 per customer when aggregated with all other deposits held in the same legal capacity at each bank, if certain conditions are met.
