What is a Cash App sponsored account?

More than half (58%) of U.S. teens report earning money, and a growing number are doing it online—through resale apps, freelance gigs, or content creation. Research shows that most teens want more control over their finances as they get older. They're not asking for permission to spend their allowance. They're earning real income and need an account that treats it that way.

Cash App sponsored accounts are built for that shift. Teens ages 13 to 17 get their own account through a parent or guardian who maintains full oversight. Your teen gets a Visa® debit card, peer-to-peer payments, interest on savings, and bitcoin access. You get real-time transaction visibility, adjustable spending limits, and an instant card lock. Cash App also offers managed accounts for children ages 6 to 12 under tighter sponsor control.4 This article focuses on sponsored accounts for teens who are ready for more independence.

What teens can do on Cash App

A Cash App sponsored account gives teens access to the same core features adults use—payments, spending, saving, and investing3—with sponsor oversight built in. Here's what your teen can do.

Send and receive money

Teens can send money to contacts you've approved and receive money from anyone on Cash App. This covers the real ways they already use money: getting paid for babysitting, splitting the cost of a group gift, or collecting their share after a team dinner. Peer-to-peer payments work the same way they do on an adult account, just with you keeping sponsor controls and visibility in place.

Get paid with direct deposit

If your teen has a job, they can set up direct deposit and get their paycheck deposited straight into their Cash App account—up to two days early. No waiting for payday, no trip to the bank to cash a check. Their employer sends the payment, and it shows up in their account before the official pay date. This works for part-time jobs, freelance gigs, or any employer that offers direct deposit. It's the same feature adults use, just with you maintaining full visibility over incoming deposits.

Spend with the Cash App Card

The Cash App Card is a Visa debit card that works online and at stores where Visa is accepted. You set spending limits, and your teen spends within those boundaries. If something comes up, you can lock the card instantly from your phone. No call to a bank, no waiting. The card also includes custom cash back offers at select merchants and an optional round-up feature that automatically moves spare change from purchases into savings—two tools that help teens build budgeting habits while they spend.

Save and earn interest

Teens can separate their spending money from their savings inside Cash App. Money moved to savings earns 3.25% interest,2 through our partner banks. That's an annual percentage yield (APY), meaning the interest compounds over time. This gives your teen a reason to set money aside and see it grow. And because spending and saving are separated, one doesn't eat into the other.

Buy stocks and bitcoin

If you allow it, Cash App gives teens the ability to buy stocks and bitcoin.3 If your teen sells sneakers online and wants to put $10 of the proceeds into bitcoin, they can do that directly in the app with your approval. You see the purchase, and they get a real introduction to how digital assets work.

Parental controls on Cash App teen account

Cash App gives you the tools to monitor activity, set boundaries, and adjust access as your teen earns more independence. Here's what you control.

Real-time transaction visibility

You see every transaction your teen makes, as it happens. Cash App sends alerts so you can stay informed about their activity without having to open the app and check. The sponsor controls and visibility features give you real-time access to your teen's spending, not just a summary at the end of the week.

Spending and merchant limits

You set the boundaries. Adjust spending limits and block specific merchants or users based on what makes sense for your teen's age and maturity. As trust builds, you can loosen limits to match their growing independence. The controls are designed to give you the ability to expand access, not just restrict it.

Automated allowance

Set up recurring allowance payments that transfer automatically to your teen's account on a schedule you choose—weekly, biweekly, or monthly. No manual transfers, no reminders. Your teen gets their allowance on time, and you can adjust the amount or pause payments whenever you need to.

Card lock and security features

If your teen's card is lost or compromised, you can lock it instantly from your phone. Think of it as an emergency lever. Cash App also provides real-time transaction alerts, 24/7 fraud detection, and Security Lock, so you and your teen both have tools to help keep the account secure.

When your teen turns 18

When your teen turns 18, their Cash App account transitions to an adult account. No re-enrollment, no new application. Their balance, savings, and transaction history carry over. They verify their identity and unlock features like stock investing and higher limits. For details on the transition, see what happens when your teen turns 18.

How to set up a Cash App teen account

Setting up a sponsored account takes a few minutes. Here's how to get your teen started.

Step 1: Check eligibility

Your teen must be between 13 and 17 years old. You need a verified Cash App account in good standing. Both of you need an iPhone or Android device with Cash App installed.

Step 2: Download Cash App

If your teen doesn't already have Cash App, have them download it from the App Store or Google Play. On your end, open Cash App and navigate to the Families tab.

Step 3: Send a sponsor request

From the Families tab, tap Invite a Teen. Enter your teen's name and phone number or email, then send the sponsor request. Your teen receives the request on their device and accepts it to link their account to yours.

Step 4: Get approved and order a Cash App Card

Once your teen accepts the sponsor request, their account is active. They can order a Cash App Card, a Visa debit card they can customize with their own design. The card ships with no hidden monthly fees. Your teen can start sending and receiving money right away, even before the physical card arrives.

A Cash App sponsored account gives your teen the financial tools they're ready for—payments, savings, investing—with the oversight you need. Set it up in minutes, adjust controls as they grow, and give them a real way to manage the money they're already earning. Get started with a sponsored account.
